Lew’s wife Dee worked at Self Regional Healthcare for over 30 years in the pharmacy department. They have three children who grew up in Greenwood and love this area, especially when Lew and Dee took them camping, fishing, and swimming at Lew’s favorite campsite in Lake Greenwood State Park.

The eldest of their three children, Lew, graduated from Lander with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and now lives in Spartanburg, where he works at BMW. Their second child, Dawn (Gunter), graduated from Lander with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 2003. She has been teaching special education students in Abbeville for 18 years and has a daughter, Morgan, who attends school in Abbeville. Lew and Dee’s youngest, Jennifer (Todd), graduated from Piedmont Technical College with an Associate’s Degree in Human Resources. Jennifer works for a local company and has three children. Wil, her eldest, will attend Lander, working on a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Arts. Matthew and Catherine attend school in Greenwood District 50.

Lew’s younger brother Jim retired as a LtCol, US Army, after 22 years. During his career, he and his family lived in many places throughout the world but came to Greenwood many times to visit Lew’s family. Jim shares Lew’s love of fishing and boating and moved with his wife Pam to a house on Lake Greenwood in 2003 to spend their retirement with Lew and family. In Greenwood, Jim was program director for health and safety for the American Red Cross and now serves on the board of local veteran’s organizations. Pam retired as a reference librarian in the Greenwood County Library.

Lew’s other siblings are scattered around in the United States. His father was a serving officer in the US Air Force and the family moved many times during his career. Wendell, his eldest brother, was a lawyer in Alabama and retired to Huntsville, AL to be near his grandchildren after a long career. Cate, his elder sister, has lived in Greenwood for 53 years. She and her husband Frank Townsend were teachers in the SC public schools for their entire career. Lew’s younger sisters, Jackie and Sarah, retired to live in New Mexico. Jackie was an Air Force Nurse and then worked in Medical Information Databases until her retirement and Sarah retired after serving in the Air Force and AF Reserve, and as a public-school science teacher.
